Land Records for Martinez Genealogy

Land records for the Martinez area go back to 1790. The Columbia County Superior Court Clerk in Evans holds all deed books, plat maps, and property transfer records. Under O.C.G.A. § 50-18-70, these are public records open to anyone.

Columbia County is one of Georgia's original counties. Early land grants in this area came from the state of Georgia after the Revolution. Some settlers received bounty land for military service. Those grant records are in the early deed books and at the Georgia Archives. If you trace your family to the Martinez area before 1800, these land grant records are essential.

Deed records within families can prove relationships. A father selling or giving land to a son names both parties and sometimes states the relationship directly. Estate divisions among heirs list all the children or beneficiaries. These are powerful genealogy tools, especially for the period before vital records existed in Georgia.

Vital Records for Martinez

Georgia began statewide birth and death registration in 1919 under O.C.G.A. § 31-10-9. Contact the Georgia Department of Public Health for records after that date. Birth certificates are $25 each. Death certificates are the same.

Under O.C.G.A. § 31-10-26, certified birth certificates are only available to the named person, parents, grandparents, adult children, adult siblings, spouses, or legal guardians. Death certificates are easier to get and list parents' names and birth dates. They are one of the best records for genealogy work.

Free death certificates from 1919 to 1943 are on the Virtual Vault. FamilySearch has Georgia death records from 1914 to 1943 indexed and free. For records before 1919, look at church records, cemetery transcriptions, and newspaper notices from the Martinez and Augusta area.
